Prison Island
Tour Overview
A short 20-minute boat ride from Stone Town lies Changuu Island, commonly known as Prison Island. Despite its intimidating name, the island was never actually used to house prisoners; instead, it served as a quarantine station for yellow fever and a place for rebellious slaves. Today, the island is a peaceful sanctuary and home to one of Zanzibar’s most famous residents: the Giant Aldabra Tortoises. Some of these magnificent creatures are over 150 years old and can weigh up to 250 kilograms. You will have the opportunity to walk among them, feed them, and learn about the conservation efforts being made to protect this vulnerable species. After visiting the tortoise sanctuary, you can explore the ruins of the old prison building and the secluded forest paths. The island is also surrounded by a stunning coral reef, making it an excellent spot for a quick snorkel in the crystal-clear shallow waters. With its blend of dark history and natural beauty, Prison Island offers a fascinating half-day escape for history buffs and animal lovers alike.
